Coinbase runs one-time MiCA stablecoin conversion Friday for EEA users swapping 14 tokens to USDC
Coinbase will execute a singular stablecoin conversion event for European Economic Area (EEA) clientele.
Fourteen stablecoins, according to Coinbase, fall outside the scope of MiCA regulations. These assets will be exchanged at prevailing market rates for EEA retail customers retaining them on the platform. The destination asset will be USDC, or another supported crypto asset or currency deemed suitable by the firm.
The deadline for this action is Friday, October 30. Any of the 14 stablecoins remaining in EEA retail Coinbase accounts on that date will undergo a swap by Coinbase (COIN). This stems from a help-center notification indicating the tokens do not meet the EU’s Markets in Crypto-Assets (MiCA) rules.
The affected tokens include Tether’s USDT, PayPal’s PYUSD, World Liberty Financial’s USD1, Sky’s USDS, and DAI. Furthermore, the list encompasses Paxos’ PAX and gold-backed PAXG, alongside GUSD, GYEN, BUST, UST, RAI, MUSD, and TGBP. Trading, buying, and converting these assets within the EEA on Coinbase are already restricted.
Holders wishing to retain these tokens must transfer them to an external wallet before October 30, as Coinbase states withdrawal is the only remaining option. Coinbase’s help page has displayed this deadline since at least mid-October.
The conversion mechanism dictates that assets remaining on the platform on October 30 will be swapped at the market rate. The resulting proceeds will be deposited into USDC, or alternatively, another supported crypto asset or currency. The notice explicitly states, “This is a one-time conversion of the balance held on that date.” Tokens deposited after this date will not be credited, traded, or converted.
Coinbase also advises that converting one crypto asset for another might incur taxation in certain jurisdictions. This notice pertains to retail customers of Coinbase Luxembourg S.A., an entity authorized by Luxembourg’s financial regulator, the CSSF, as a crypto-asset service provider under MiCA.
The exchange references MiCA’s transitional period for stablecoin issuers, which the notice claims “ended on July 1, 2026, and was not extended,” rendering the platform unable to support coins from non-MiCA authorized issuers.
This development follows a December 2024 restriction by Coinbase Europe Limited and Coinbase Germany GmbH on six stablecoins for retail users starting December 13, specifically USDT, PAX, PYUSD, GUSD, GYEN, and DAI. At that juncture, customers were offered options to sell, convert to USDC or EURC, or move the tokens off the platform.
The broader trend reflects regulatory pressure on decentralized finance infrastructure. The European Banking Authority recently classified USDC, issued by Circle (CRCL), as MiCA's first significant e-money token, aligning institutional focus with evolving regulatory standards for digital assets.
Why it matters
This conversion highlights the immediate operational impact of MiCA compliance on centralized exchange offerings for DeFi assets. Readers should watch how this forced migration affects liquidity and the broader landscape of stablecoin adoption within the EEA. The strict enforcement signals a hardening of regulatory boundaries for non-compliant protocol assets.
