SK Hynix posts record quarter, expects memory demand to outrun supply through 2030
SK Hynix achieved a record quarterly revenue, surpassing 100 trillion won for the first time.
The memory chip manufacturer stated that demand for memory is projected to outpace supply until 2030. Furthermore, the company indicated that its volumes for both DRAM and HBM are effectively sold out through 2029.
The earnings release showed revenue reaching 104.6 trillion won (nearly $78 billion) and an operating profit of 83.3 trillion won ($65.5 billion). This represented a 328% increase in revenue and a 632% increase in operating profit, yielding an 80% operating margin.
CFO Kim Woo-hyun explained that supply constraints are anticipated to continue through 2030 due to the complexities of implementing leading-edge processes and the necessary lead times for constructing new production facilities.
SK Hynix noted that 14 key customers, including major global cloud providers, have entered into long-term agreements. These contracts secure over 50% of the company's production capacity for 2027 and 2028.
The company observed that some customers recently modified their HBM specifications, which SK Hynix interprets as evidence of overwhelming demand, given the need for them to build more AI accelerators from constrained chip quantities.
CEO Kwak Noh-Jung responded to inquiries regarding AI investment confidence by mentioning that major cloud customers reported year-over-year cloud revenue growth ranging from 30% to 80%, alongside cloud order backlogs expanding two-fold to five-fold.
This situation reflects a broader trend where specialized hardware requirements, such as those for AI infrastructure, are driving intense capital allocation and supply bottlenecks across the semiconductor ecosystem.
Why it matters
This supply constraint highlights the intense capital expenditure driving the AI infrastructure buildout, which underpins the demand for advanced compute resources. For the broader crypto ecosystem, this massive demand for specialized hardware reflects the underlying growth in decentralized AI and data processing capabilities.
