Ritual Launches AI-Native Layer 1, enabling autonomous agents with onchain identity and wallet control
Ritual Chain, an EVM-compatible Layer 1, has been launched by Ritual, a lab focusing on autonomous intelligence.
This network enables AI agents to function as enduring economic entities. Such agents possess control over their own wallets, onchain identity, and private state.
Unlike traditional blockchains primarily designed for financial transfers, Ritual Chain is architected to support software capable of independent intelligence use, capital control, external service interaction, and sustained operation without constant human oversight.
The network integrates native functionalities for AI model access, private computation, and autonomous scheduling within EVM applications. A prime example of this capability is the deployment of long-lived AI agents, designed to operate over months or years.
These agents maintain persistence independent of their creator's machine or operator. They manage and spend funds from their own non-custodial wallets, while trusted execution environments ensure sensitive prompts and keys remain confidential from compute operators.
Ritual Chain features sub-300 millisecond block times, positioning it among the industry's fastest Layer 1 networks. It incorporates 15 native precompiles, directly embedding capabilities such as LLM inference, web access, and autonomous scheduling into the execution layer.
The protocol employs a novel execution and verification architecture. This delegates computationally heavy tasks to specialized nodes, which are then verified by the network, circumventing the replicated execution found in most blockchains. This "execute-once, verify-many-times" model supports larger workloads, including AI inference.
Current AI agents are often session-bound, operating while a human monitors them on infrastructure controlled by others. This model fails for agents managing treasuries or running recurring services over extended periods.
On Ritual Chain, an agent's state and identity reside onchain. Its scheduled tasks continue within its allotted permissions and budget, and sensitive inputs are shielded inside trusted execution environments. This continuity is managed at the protocol level, allowing the chain's heartbeat mechanism to restart an agent if it ceases operation.
Economic autonomy is established through agent-controlled wallets, permitting agents to price services and settle transactions without requiring human signers. Niraj Pant, co-founder of Ritual, stated, “As we move toward AGI, intelligence is beginning to separate from human agency and enter the economy on its own terms. It can hold assets, make commitments, transact, and persist independently. Once that becomes possible at scale, humans are no longer the only entities capable of forming markets or economic relationships. Ritual provides the infrastructure for those actors to exist and operate on their own.”
The launch includes integrations with Phala Network for GPU-backed trusted execution environments, LayerZero for cross-chain messaging, and Stargate for USDC movement between Ritual Chain and other networks. Nous Research is also bringing Hermes to Ritual Chain.
This development signals a significant shift in DeFi and L2 architecture, moving beyond simple transactional layers to provide foundational infrastructure for autonomous economic actors operating on-chain.
Why it matters
This launch signals a significant shift in L1 design, moving beyond simple financial transactions to natively support persistent, autonomous economic actors. For DeFi and governance watchers, this protocol-level integration of intelligence challenges existing assumptions about agent persistence and control on current chains. The integration with partners like Phala Network and LayerZero suggests a focus on verifiable computation and cross-chain interoperability for these new actors.
