Ripple Charters National Trust Bank to Oversee RLUSD Reserves and Custody
Ripple has obtained final approval from the Office of the Comptroller of the Currency to establish Ripple National Trust Bank.
This move enhances federal oversight concerning the company's stablecoin activities and expands the range of services offered to institutional participants.
The newly chartered bank will be responsible for managing segregated reserves for Ripple USD (RLUSD). Furthermore, it will function as a collateral trustee for holders and offer fiduciary digital asset custody services.
RLUSD will maintain its issuance through Standard Custody & Trust Company. Concurrently, Bank of New York Mellon will serve as the primary reserve custodian, providing monthly attestations.
Ripple stated that this bank will facilitate wider institutional offerings across payments, custody, and capital markets as RLUSD expands. Since its December 2024 launch, RLUSD has achieved a $2.5 billion market capitalization.
The firm confirms that the stablecoin is entirely supported by cash and cash equivalents, such as U.S. government securities.
Brad Garlinghouse, CEO of Ripple, commented, “For years, we’ve said crypto and banks work better together. Final approval for Ripple National Trust Bank is what that looks like in practice. We’ve spent over a decade building regulated financial infrastructure that institutions can actually use at scale. A national trust charter gives us an even stronger foundation for RLUSD and the institutional products we’re building across payments, custody and capital markets.”
This development signifies a formal institutional pathway for digital asset operations, integrating regulated banking structures directly into the infrastructure supporting stablecoin utility and custody solutions.
Why it matters
This move signals a significant step toward institutional adoption by embedding federal oversight into the stablecoin's reserve management. For DeFi and L2 ecosystems, the integration of regulated banking infrastructure directly impacts the trust models underpinning stable assets. Investors should watch how this regulated custody framework influences future stablecoin design and governance.
