Osmosis Protocol ends inflation, sets OSMO issuance to zero following October 26 governance vote

Osmosis Crypto has seen a rally following the cessation of OSMO inflation, which reduces token dilution. This shift redirects staking rewards toward protocol revenue.

The community voted to discontinue new OSMO issuance, a change effective October 26. This action reduced daily minting from 91,324 tokens to zero, eliminating ongoing dilution.

With no new tokens being created, existing holders are no longer subject to inflationary pressure. Staking rewards will now be derived from protocol revenue, increasing the importance of trading activity for the token's future outlook.

This development emphasizes fixed-supply crypto projects, where scarcity is embedded in the economic model rather than decided later via governance. Osmosis, a decentralized exchange for the Cosmos ecosystem, utilizes IBC infrastructure for connecting blockchains.

The network's October 2026 governance proposal passed with 91.1% of participating voting power. Consequently, Osmosis has halted inflationary issuance, funding staking rewards through protocol revenue instead of newly minted tokens.

This removal of new token issuance removes a source of dilution that could otherwise create selling pressure when recipients liquidate their staking rewards. However, Osmosis faces the challenge of generating sufficient fees to support staking rewards and re-engage users.

DefiLlama data indicated that Osmosis's total value locked decreased from about $811 million at the close of 2021 to around $11 million in October 2026.

In contrast, Bitcoin Hyper is developing a Bitcoin Layer 2 intended for faster transactions and applications like decentralized exchanges and staking, utilizing Solana Virtual Machine technology. This project features a fixed maximum supply of 21 billion HYPER tokens.

Osmosis raised $21 million in an October 2021 token sale, involving Paradigm, Robot Ventures, Nascent, Ethereal Ventures, and Figment. Bitcoin Hyper has secured over $33.2 million through its ongoing presale, without major Venture capitalist participation.

Both projects illustrate the significance of token economics: Osmosis has switched off inflation, while Bitcoin Hyper is structuring its development around a predetermined supply ceiling.

Why it matters

This tokenomics shift demonstrates how fundamental changes in supply mechanics can alter market perception of established DeFi protocols. Readers should watch how Osmosis sustains staking rewards through protocol fees to maintain user engagement. This sets a precedent for how fixed supply models are being adopted across different L2 and DeFi architectures.
