Kraken offers Bitcoin, Ethereum options to European traders, Oct 26

Kraken announced on October 26 that eligible traders within the European Economic Area can now access Bitcoin and Ethereum options.

These options are available through the existing Kraken Pro derivatives accounts on both web and mobile platforms. The rollout integrates USD-settled contracts into current derivatives accounts.

The contracts utilize the collateral already supporting the traders' futures positions. This expands upon an options rollout that commenced in July for professional and institutional clients. Previously, European access was anticipated for a later date in 2026.

The contracts are cash-settled, meaning premium, profit and loss, and final settlement are calculated in U.S. dollars, irrespective of the currency used for collateral posting. Expiries span from weekly and monthly terms up to quarterly and semiannual maturities.

Portfolio margin is active by default, allowing offsetting positions to reduce the required portfolio support amount. Both futures and options draw from a shared collateral pool. The options employ futures-style margining; premium is not paid initially, while gains and losses are marked against collateral.

Kraken issued warnings regarding the risks, stating that buyers risk losing their entire options position value, and sellers could face unlimited losses, potentially exceeding posted margin. Furthermore, the European derivatives risk disclosure cautions that leverage magnifies both gains and losses, and clients might need to provide extra collateral quickly, as positions can close if collateral is inadequate.

Trading occurs via a request-for-quote system, allowing clients to structure a trade with up to five components, or legs, before reviewing quotes that have a limited lifespan. If a portfolio enters a distressed state, Kraken utilizes a sealed-offer auction instead of liquidation through an order book.

This default options portfolio margin differs from Kraken’s separate Unified Wallet upgrade, which, as reported by CryptoSlate on October 19, mandates manual activation to pool eligible spot and derivatives balances. Once activated, this default cross margin setting can subject eligible spot holdings to losses incurred in futures.

This expansion into EEA options trading reflects the increasing sophistication of regulated access to complex derivatives products within the digital asset space.
