HKGX integrates Chainlink CCIP for XGZ gold token cross-chain transfers

The Hong Kong Gold Exchange (HKGX) is planning to incorporate Chainlink's cross-chain technology for its gold-backed XGZ token.

This integration will permit the digital asset to traverse various blockchain networks.

Chainlink stated in an October 27 announcement that GoldZip, the entity behind XGZ, is collaborating with Midas Labs to implement Chainlink's Cross-Chain Interoperability Protocol (CCIP). This aims to allow XGZ to move securely across supported blockchains, extending beyond its current Ethereum deployment.

HKGX is noted as the world's fourth-largest gold trading venue by volume, and the exchange's history dates back to 1910. GoldZip is utilizing CCIP, developed with Midas Labs, to enable this cross-chain functionality for digital assets and information between separate networks.

Currently, XGZ exists as an ERC-20 token on Ethereum. Upon completion of the integration, the token may become accessible on other supported networks, allowing holders to transfer their gold-backed assets without Ethereum limitations.

Chainlink's CCIP furnishes a standardized framework for moving tokens and messages between blockchains. This infrastructure enables issuers to govern asset movement across networks using Chainlink's processing capabilities for cross-chain transactions.

This development follows Chainlink's September 28 launch of CCIP 2.0, which introduced new infrastructure for institutional digital assets and cross-chain exchanges. GoldZip was identified among the integration partners for this upgraded protocol, alongside entities such as Fidelity International and Deutsche Börse Group's Crypto Finance.

GoldZip's XGZ token represents ownership claims tied to physical gold held in recognized vaults, where one token equals one gram of 99.99% fine gold. The token's backing is composed of approved bars verified before being placed in HKGX-recognized depositories.

The adoption of CCIP aligns with broader trends in institutional involvement, as evidenced by BitGo choosing Chainlink's protocol for its Wrapped Bitcoin ecosystem in August. Furthermore, HKGX Chairman Haywood Cheung indicated the necessity for the exchange to explore blockchain trading to match evolving financial market technology.

This push for interoperability reflects a wider trend where market participants and institutions are increasingly seeking mechanisms to bridge traditional asset custody with decentralized ledger technology.
