BNY offers XRP custody service for eligible clients, one rollout type available
BNY has introduced custody services for XRP and Ripple's RLUSD stablecoin for eligible institutional clients, as per an announcement from Ripple on October 27.
This offering provides institutions with an additional mechanism to manage and hold the XRP Ledger’s native token, offering a banking channel for asset safeguarding and operational management. BNY characterizes its platform as integrating custody with settlement, accounting, and servicing functions.
The announcement did not specify any funded XRP custody clients, nor did it disclose an XRP balance or any incremental purchases. Moving tokens already held by clients to BNY would change custodianship without necessarily generating new demand for the asset.
BNY’s platform utilizes segregated wallets, operational controls, and oversight. It also presents both digital and traditional assets within a unified environment for settlement, accounting, and servicing, which can streamline asset administration and reconciliation for an institution.
Custody availability alone does not confirm that every institution possesses the requisite mandate, approvals, or appetite to acquire XRP. Furthermore, neither the release nor BNY's platform description provided an XRP-specific list of eligible customers or jurisdictions, noting that service availability varies by customer and location.
The bank's earlier European custody expansion on October 8 was for select institutions and did not establish XRP-specific access across the EU. BNY's prior engagement with Ripple involved RLUSD's reserve custody, announced on July 9, 2025, concerning the reserve assets and cash backing the stablecoin.
The clearest indicator of service utilization would be XRP deposited into funded client custody accounts. However, a BNY balance only indicates tokens held there, leaving the acquisition method open, as transferring existing holdings does not imply a new market purchase.
Market participants should note that BNY's provision of safekeeping is distinct from an institution deciding to acquire tokens; the bank acts as a custodian, not an XRP buyer for its own balance sheet.
These developments, alongside C2FO's separate initiative with Ripple on October 27 to integrate financing and settlement for C2FO Instant Pay onto the XRP Ledger using RLUSD, highlight evolving infrastructure utilization.
The integration of these services suggests a deeper institutional engagement with the underlying protocols, moving beyond simple asset holding toward integrated financial workflow execution on the ledger.
Why it matters
This institutional custody offering provides a banking route for asset safekeeping, which is a key factor in enterprise adoption of XRPL assets. However, the distinction between holding existing tokens and initiating new purchases highlights that custody alone does not signal market demand for XRP.
