BlackRock joins SBI, Startale to explore linking tokenized funds with yen stablecoin JPYSC
BlackRock, SBI Holdings, and Startale have entered into a memorandum of understanding.
This agreement aims to explore integrating tokenized money market funds with JPYSC, a stablecoin denominated in Japanese yen, within Japan's onchain finance ecosystem.
The October 27 announcement from SBI Holdings and Startale noted that BlackRock Financial Management and BlackRock Japan signed the MOU to examine this proposed link.
The scope of the agreement encompasses technical development, potential business avenues, and necessary regulatory considerations, although no commercial launch has been declared by the involved parties.
This potential arrangement would merge tokenized investment vehicles with a yen-based payment instrument under a unified financial infrastructure.
The examination will focus on the blockchain infrastructure required to connect tokenized money market funds to JPYSC, covering transaction support systems, distribution channels, and service access rules.
SBI Holdings contributes its expertise in banking, securities, and digital asset operations, while Startale provides blockchain development capabilities. BlackRock's involvement leverages its U.S. financial management business and its Japanese subsidiary's experience with investment funds.
BlackRock Japan President Yukiko Hashimoto stated that digital assets and tokenization "could create new opportunities for investors in Japan," adding that BlackRock would contribute its global expertise to the collaboration.
The collaboration will involve consulting with various financial institutions and enterprises both within Japan and internationally as operating models are formulated. No details regarding investment commitments, transaction volumes, or funding structures were disclosed.
SBI Holdings Chairman and President Yoshitaka Kitao emphasized that "The shift to onchain finance is becoming an unavoidable global trend," indicating that the SBI Group will continue developing services to support this transition.
The focus of the BlackRock agreement differs from stablecoins; money market funds hold short-term instruments, whereas tokenized fund shares represent investment interests governed by fund rules.
The participants identified regulation as one of three areas needing further review before a commercial operation between JPYSC and tokenized funds could proceed.
Startale CEO Sota Watanabe characterized exploring the connection as "an important step toward building the foundations of onchain finance," stressing the need for Japan to advance its blockchain infrastructure.
BlackRock has previously developed tokenized money market fund infrastructure via its BUIDL product, which permits eligible institutional cryptocurrency traders to use tokenized holdings as collateral.
BlackRock Financial Management Managing Director Jonathan Steel noted the collaboration intends to explore how tokenization could "expand access, improve efficiency," bridging traditional finance with novel blockchain services.
This initiative aligns with the broader trend of institutional participants assessing how decentralized ledger technology can reshape established financial market functionalities.
