Bitmine Immersion Technologies shifts focus to share buybacks amid crypto dip

Bitmine Immersion Technologies is shifting its strategy toward share repurchases during a market downturn, rather than increasing its acquisition of Ether.

Last week, the company bought back 2.04 million shares as part of its major crypto treasury buyback initiative. These shares were acquired at an average price of $22.48, amounting to approximately $45.9 million.

This action follows a pause of roughly 10 weeks and contributes to a larger 2026 program. This program has seen 22.9 million shares repurchased, totaling $399.6 million, with an average purchase price of $17.48. This represents the largest equity buyback among any crypto treasury company.

The firm maintains substantial holdings, including 6,051,933 ETH, which equates to 4.95% of the total 122.2 million ETH supply. Additionally, it holds 215 Bitcoin (BTC), $514 million in cash and marketable securities, and stakes valued at $76 million in Eightco and $180 million in Beast Industries. Total crypto, cash, and moonshot holdings reach $15 billion, with over 5.2 million ETH currently staked, valued at $12.3 billion.

Chairman Thomas "Tom" Lee stated that management believes current market conditions favor buybacks to enhance investor value. He noted, "When management believes Bitmine shares are relatively undervalued, the Company intends to accretively repurchase shares, subject to market conditions and under the existing repurchase authorization."

Lee further observed that crypto pullbacks have been shallower compared to previous periods, which he interprets as evidence supporting an ongoing bull market. He added, "Crypto got pulled down by the same 'risk off' forces behind the AI sell-off. In contrast to late-2025 and early 2026, crypto pullbacks have been comparatively shallow."

The firm continues its weekly ETH accumulation while maintaining that the present environment favors share buybacks. At the time of reporting, ETH was priced at $2,308, showing a 3.8% decline over the preceding seven days.

This strategic pivot by a major Ethereum treasury entity suggests that institutional participants are assessing current market weakness not as a fundamental collapse, but as a temporary condition conducive to optimizing shareholder returns via equity acquisition.

Why it matters

This shift in strategy indicates management's current view on internal share value versus external asset accumulation during a market dip. For readers focused on DeFi and L2s, this highlights how large treasury entities are timing capital deployment based on perceived market health. The comparison between crypto pullbacks and other asset classes offers insight into current market narratives.
