BitMine adds $24M in ETH, buying back shares amid market weakness
BitMine (NASDAQ: BMNR) recently reported acquiring 10,452 ETH, valued at approximately $24 million, via a post on X.
This acquisition increases its 30-day accumulation of Ethereum to about 68,000 ETH. Its overall ETH holdings now reach 6.05 million ETH. Notably, BMNR also executed a buyback of $45 million worth of its own stock.
Strategically, BMNR is concurrently increasing its ETH holdings while repurchasing company shares. This action is significant given that BMNR's stock has declined by over 20% this month, marking its worst monthly performance since June and erasing more than 60% of its Q3 gains after nearly touching $30.
This purchasing pattern suggests BMNR is utilizing current price weakness to both build its Ethereum treasury and repurchase company stock. Attention is now focused on the forthcoming macroeconomic week.
Despite a U.S. equity rebound aided by lower oil prices, BMNR has dropped over 6% this week, placing its $20 support level at risk. Should a greater risk-off sentiment prevail, this could exert additional downward pressure on BMNR's shares as it continues to buy back stock at a lower price.
This raises the question of whether BitMine can maintain its Ethereum accumulation strategy amid wider market fragility.
As the largest entity holding an Ethereum treasury, BMNR's recent activity could influence other Data Asset Treasuries (DATs). However, on-chain data suggests a different trend.
From a macroeconomic viewpoint, November presents significant volatility, centered on interest rate developments. If the Federal Reserve maintains a neutral stance but offers a more hawkish future policy outlook, capital could still exit risk assets, prompting a risk-off movement.
Against this backdrop, the deceleration in corporate ETH accumulation warrants scrutiny. SharpLink Gaming (NASDAQ: SBET), the next largest ETH holder, currently possesses over 880k ETH in its DAT but has added less than 1,100 ETH in the last 30 days.
This contrasts with the over 68k ETH flowing into BitMine's treasury, indicating that corporate accumulation remains highly concentrated rather than distributed across other holders. Furthermore, SBET has declined by over 22% this month.
This suggests that if market weakness persists, these treasuries might lack the capacity to accumulate ETH at previous rates, potentially allowing BMNR to capture a larger share of corporate Ethereum demand. Therefore, while BMNR's latest 10k ETH purchase signals bullish intent, it may not counteract the broader deceleration in corporate ETH accumulation, suggesting Ethereum could face pressure before key macroeconomic events.
The current behavior of BMNR—continuing to buy ETH and repurchase shares despite market weakness—while other treasuries exhibit slower ETH buying, could constrain overall corporate demand for Ethereum.
The concentration of corporate accumulation, as evidenced by the differing purchasing rates between BMNR and SBET, highlights how large institutional actions drive market dynamics in the DeFi landscape.
Why it matters
BitMine's continued accumulation amid stock weakness raises questions about the sustainability of corporate ETH demand. If broader macro risks cause a risk-off sentiment, the concentration of demand in large holders like BMNR could become more pronounced. This dynamic is critical for understanding future institutional pressure on Ethereum.
